Scene from old Soviet movie "До свиданья, мальчики" (1964). John Dunker (real name Ivan Ivanovich Sokolov) was very popular performer in late 1930's. Lady playing piano accompaniment and audience are very typical for that time. This was the only image of Hawaiian music I knew for years, just had no idea about Sol Hoopii, pedal triple neck steels etc.

It's from old Soviet movie of 1967, which was supposed to be a comedy, where main character along with his mother is in search for a wife, but the way it's done reminds me Ed Wood rather than Billy Wilder. Anyway, music by Alexander Zatsepin is excellent and vocals by Elmira Uruzbaeva as well, as you can witness from this clip.

The teenagers organize a music festival to prove rock and roll has nothing to do with the Devil! Here is one of my desert island albums - when I've got it on a magnetic tape long time ago I could play it again and again. First side of LP is simpy the best, here is everything that rock means to me, Mick Tucker drums especially, this album is one of the kind, I guess, and it certainly was one of the things which made me a sort of guitar player.

King of Jazz is a 1930 motion picture starring Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra. The film's title was taken from Whiteman's controversial, self-conferred appellation. (This might seem controversial these days, but in the 1920s, it was Whiteman who signed and featured great white jazz musicians including Venuti, Lang, Dorsey, Beiderbecke, Trumbauer and others.) The film was shot entirely in the early two-color Technicolor process and was produced by Carl Laemmle for Universal Pictures. The movie featured several songs sung on camera by the Rhythm Boys (Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, and Harry Barris).....

Hello and give a warm welcome to Ansambel Apelsin - the living legend of contemporary Estonian music - the band and its leader Tõnu Aare just celebrated 35th anniversary and continue to play regular gigs evry month. They started in Soviet times in the beginning of 70s and had a huge success in USSR. The band looked quite different with their specific estonian sense of humour, great musical arrangement, virtuoso instrumentations by Tõnu Aare, great voices of Ants Nuut and Jaan Arder (the last was also a member of Hortus Musicus - famous estonian early music collective) and burlesque performances including bold appearence of Mati Nuude. Here goes a great example of the band in their early years:

Interesting fact was that while all soviet bands of that time played weird guitars like Musimas from DDR and Chech Iolanas Apelsin used very decent gear, like Vox guitars and Fender lap steel. As you could see Tõnu Aare plays banjo quite alright, he has a great baritone as well also he's a master of guitar and mandolin, and you can check it out right now - here is a collection of instrumental tracks of wide variety, from melancholic ballads to bluegrass and blues, hope you'll like it as much as I do.
